Our Story

At Wilderness Escape Adventures, we offer guided wilderness camping and hiking trips in Kananaskis Country and on nearby Crown land in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, south of the Banff and Canmore area.

Our small-group and private backcountry tours are designed for travelers who want the Banff-area wilderness experience without the crowds, campgrounds, and tour buses.

Led by certified IGA wilderness guides with wilderness first aid training, every trip focuses on safety, local knowledge, and true off-the-beaten-path terrain.

You’ll hike remote trails, random camp on Crown land where it’s legal, enjoy open campfires when conditions allow, and experience real backcountry solitude under the stars.

Join us to explore the quieter side of the Canadian Rockies and create your own story in the Alberta wilderness.

Reviews

Our three-day trip with Jelmer as our guide was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. From the very first moment, his calm, friendly demeanor was striking, exactly what you want when you're going on a family adventure in nature. Jelmer is incredibly knowledgeable about the Canadian wilderness: from animals and plants to local stories and hidden gems. He always knows how to find that one spot that's not in the guidebooks.
The food during our trip was also surprisingly good, fresh, tasty, and prepared with great care, which really made a difference during the trip. Jelmer knows exactly how to guide a group in a relaxed way, without pressure, but with a keen eye for everyone.
We were with four teenagers, which can sometimes be a challenge 😉, but thanks to Jelmer, everyone was so enthusiastic. He managed to hold their attention, engage them, and truly let them enjoy the adventure.
In short: Jelmer is a top guide who effortlessly combines knowledge, calm, and fun. Thanks to him, we not only saw beautiful places but also made memories we won't soon forget. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to experience Canada in a pure and unique way!

FAQ

  1. Do I need my own camping gear for Wilderness Escape Adventures trips?
Everything is arranged from A to Z. You only need to bring your own clothing, footwear, and a few personal items listed in the packing guide you’ll receive after booking.

  2. Where do Wilderness Escape Adventures trips start, and how do I get there from Calgary?
Meet in downtown Calgary or Diamond Valley, then drive together toward the camping area; most guests use their own or a rental vehicle. For the final stretch of gravel road, you’re welcome to hop into the guide’s truck if you are not comfortable driving your own vehicle. Depending on the group size and situation.  Full transportation can also be arranged for an additional CAD $250, either with a rented vehicle organized on your behalf or with the guide doing the driving in a rented vehicle that carries appropriate commercial liability coverage for highway and city travel, in line with Alberta’s strict insurance requirements. If you booked a private adventure, we can discuss your preferred meeting/pickup location.  Please reach out, and we can plan accordingly

  3. Are your Kananaskis and Crown land camping trips suitable for beginners?
Yes, these trips are designed for beginner and intermediate outdoor enthusiasts with a moderate level of fitness. They are ideal for people who can comfortably walk about 10 km a day on uneven terrain and enjoy being active outdoors for several hours. You do not need any previous backcountry or camping experience—your guide takes care of navigation, camp setup, and safety, and can tailor the itinerary to match your comfort level if you are unsure.

  4. Are your guided wilderness trips near Banff or in the Banff area of the Canadian Rockies?
Trips run in Kananaskis Country and on nearby Crown land in the Alberta Rockies, south of the Banff and Canmore area. The area is wildlife‑rich and uncrowded, with hikeable terrain and treeline mountains rather than mainly high alpine peaks, so it feels alive and truly wild. Day hikes can still reach Kananaskis viewpoints with classic Rocky Mountain scenery, while your camp stays in quieter country where wildlife is abundant, trails are emptier, and the wilderness experience is more immersive.

  5. What is included in the price of a Wilderness Escape Adventures trip (meals, gear, transport)?
Everything you need in camp is taken care of. Trips include professional guiding, safety planning, tents and camp setup, sleeping systems, cooking gear, and freshly prepared backcountry meals, plus route planning, navigation, and firewood when conditions allow. All you bring are your clothes, footwear, and a few personal items from the packing list—everything else is organized for you so you can focus on the experience itself.
