Weather & Trip Changes

If we need to cancel a trip before departure because of severe weather, safety concerns, or other unforeseen conditions, international guests receive a full refund, and Alberta residents receive full credit toward a future trip. If weather or conditions require adjustments during the trip, we will work with you to find the best solution, though any additional costs, such as alternate accommodation, remain the guest’s responsibility.

Who Can Join

Our group camping trips are designed for adults ages 25 and older who want a relaxed small‑group wilderness experience in the Alberta Rockies. They are a good fit for people who enjoy hiking, camp life, and time outdoors, and who are comfortable sharing the experience with a small group of like‑minded guests.

Private trips are available for adults, couples, families, and small groups, and children ages 10 and older are welcome on private trips only. For safety and comfort, private trips allow a maximum of 2 children per paying adult or guardian.

Fitness & Expectations

Guests should be in good general health and comfortable with moderate hiking and outdoor living. Most days include several hours of hiking at a steady but relaxed pace with breaks, uneven ground, and some elevation gain, plus time around camp.

These trips are not suitable for guests who require frequent or urgent medical care, need modern facilities such as showers and flush toilets, or feel stressed without phone reception, Wi‑Fi, and regular access to town. The experience is remote and real, but the pace is calm and the focus is on comfort, safety, and enjoyment rather than extreme challenge.

Personalized Guest Experience & Safety

Every booking starts with a short video call so we can talk through the trip, answer questions, and make sure the experience is the right fit for you or your group. Before confirming, all guests complete a simple fitness and medical intake form, including allergies and dietary needs, and sign a waiver.

Safety and preparation are a central part of every trip. Wilderness Escape Adventures is led by a guide with training in wilderness first aid, wildlife and bear safety, fire safety, and food handling, backed by years of experience camping, hiking, and guiding in these areas of Alberta. You get the benefit of that preparation without having to figure everything out yourself.

Meals & Dietary Needs

Food is a key part of the experience. Breakfast and dinner at camp are freshly prepared and designed to be hearty, simple, and satisfying after a day outdoors, with coffee, tea, and drinking water always available. Typical meals include eggs, meat, vegetables, and campfire‑style dishes rather than freeze‑dried camping food.

Vegetarian and pescatarian options are usually possible with advance notice, and we can often work around specific allergies if you tell us during the booking process. At this time we are not able to offer fully vegan menus. Guests bring their own daytime hiking snacks such as bars, nuts, trail mix, and any preferred sports drinks.

Travel Insurance & Gratuities

We strongly recommend that guests carry travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and evacuation, especially for international visitors. Wilderness travel always carries some uncertainty, and insurance is the best way to protect your investment if something unexpected happens before or during your trip.

Gratuities for your guide are never required but are appreciated if you feel the experience and level of care

exceeded your expectations. Many guests choose to offer a (cash) tip at the end of the trip as a way to say thank you.

What happens after I send an inquiry?

After you send an inquiry, we reply personally and, if the trip looks like a good fit, we arrange a short video call to go over your plans, answer questions, and make sure the experience suits you or your group.

Once you are ready to move forward, you will receive access to complete the online waiver and fitness assessment form, including any important medical, allergy, or dietary information. After those forms are completed, we send you a secure payment link for the 35% deposit.

Your booking is confirmed once the deposit has been paid.

The remaining balance is due 14 days before your trip starts.

What should I bring or prepare?

Bring clothing and gear suited for the outdoors. Arrive prepared. What you will want to bring:

  • Comfortable clothes to sleep in (thermo/baselayer)

FAQ

1. Can I join if I have never camped before?
Yes, as long as you are reasonably active and open to being outdoors for several days. We walk you through how everything works and handle the core camp tasks so you are not left figuring things out alone.

2. Do you run trips in bad weather?
We are very lucky to be in a very sunny province with little rain. However, changing mountain conditions are part of the experience, and we plan around them. If severe weather or safety concerns mean a trip cannot run as planned, we follow the Weather & Trip Changes policy above and work with you on the best solution.

3. Can I book solo?
Yes. Solo guests are welcome on group trips if there is availability, and many people find the small-group format a good way to travel alone but not be alone. Private trips can also be booked for one person at the private rate.

4. How far in advance should I book?
Availability is limited because trips run with small groups and currently only a single lead guide.

Booking a few months ahead is recommended for peak summer dates; for shoulder seasons, you can sometimes confirm closer to departure

Skill Level

Choosing Your Adventure: Skill Levels and Expectations

Experiencing Alberta’s wilderness is rewarding for hikers of all backgrounds, but if you’re used to hiking in areas without mountains, it’s important to know that mountain trails can feel much more demanding. As a rule of thumb: if you typically hike 20 km comfortably on flat ground, expect your comfortable distance in the mountains to be closer to 10 km, once elevation, terrain, and altitude are factored in.

Our Fitness & Skill Levels

  • Beginner: Short, local walks or hikes under 5–8 km with minimal elevation gain, perfect for those new to hiking or getting back into outdoor adventures.

  • Moderate: Regular hikes of 8–12 km, with up to 300–600 m elevation gain on maintained trails.

  • Intermediate: Full-day hikes of 12–16 km with 600–900 m elevation gain and some uneven or rocky terrain.

  • Advanced: Challenging days in the mountains—16–24 km, 1200–1800 m elevation gain, steep sections, and long 8–12 hour hiking days.

  • Expert: For those with lots of experience, multi-day backcountry trips (3–7 days), 20+ km per day, 1000+ m of elevation gain, and a heavy multi-day pack (15+ kg).

Hiking is Always Optional

Your time in the wilderness is yours to shape. While our guided hikes are a highlight and a great way to explore Alberta’s spectacular scenery, it’s always your choice. You’re welcome to relax at camp, enjoy the peace and quiet, watch for wildlife, try out some photography, or simply unwind by the river. Whether you spend your days on the trail or savor tranquil moments at camp, your experience will be rich with wilderness immersion.

If you’re unsure which trip best suits your experience or interests, just reach out, we’re happy to help you choose the perfect adventure!
